West Coasting the coast of South Africa

This blog post takes me to the West Coast of South Africa on a last minute surfing mission with a few friends and what a great time we had.

Leaving Cape Town late on Saturday afternoon, we arrived in Elands Bay in the evening and decided that we were going to stay in the Hotel Backpackers for the night, as the wind was blowing and it was cold. We settled in and got a fire going, had some ice cold beers, trying to take in the “Wes Kus” as the surfers saying goes. We had a braai, some boerewors rolls and then it was bed time as we all pretty tired from the day and the drive.

We woke up at 8am hoping to get some waves, alas the swell had not kicked in just yet, hoping it would be coming with the pushing tide. We took a drive up towards another town up the coast looking at certain spots and the wind was wrong, it was pumping and it was cold, we all felt so bummed. I said to the Gary and Kristin that I was pretty amped to head back to Cape Town and surf there, as all I had was my friends saying…..Kbay is firing, Hoek is cooking and here I am at a dead flat Elands Bay.

Gary twisted my arm and said he saw a place called Pili Pili some surf backpackers in town, we pulled in and what a great idea. This place ROCKED!!.

Cruising inside we were met by 3 guys – A Swedish guy who had ridden his bicycle from Cairo “Yes Cairo in Egypt” and Ricky and Patrick the guys running the spot. These guys were both super helpful. They made us some wicked food, played non-stop surf movies and even made us “Rooste Brookies” for dinner that night after we decided that we were going to stay and hope to get some waves on the Monday.

We went for a little surf in tiny waves down the beach and I noticed so many Crayfish on the beach, recent events made all the crayfish walk out the water due to no oxygen.

Pili Pili Rocked in the night, we had a great braai, and had a good couple of beers and heard some amazing stories from Daniel the guy who is riding from Cairo to Cape Town.

We woke up on Monday morning to an amazing day, not a breath of wind but no swell around, wellat least not at Elands Bay. We decided to mission and go find some surf. We found some really good waves and had a fun surf – I can not mention the spot as to keep in as pristine as possible.

After the days surf, we headed back to Cape Town, all really tired and super amped to get into a nice hot shower and relax on the couch.

 Till next time.

 Cheers,
